Management
The UC Davis Sustainable Transportation Center is governed by a director with assistance from an executive committee, the educational director, an external advisory committee, UC Davis transportation faculty, and STC staff.
Susan Handy, Ph.D., a professor in the UC Davis Department of Environmental Science and Policy, is director. Handy oversees all STC activities and programs and represents the STC at external meetings and events.
The executive committee provides input to the director on STC activities and approves the annual budget, funding decisions, and operating policies. Current executive committee members are Patricia Mokhtarian, Ph.D., a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Dan Sperling, Ph.D., a professor of Environmental Science and Policy and director of the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS-Davis).
Mokhtarian also serves as educational director. In this role, she is responsible for awarding program fellowships as a part of the admissions process for both the ITS-Davis Graduate Group in Transportation Technology and Policy (TTP), which she chairs, and the STC’s programs.
The external advisory committee comprises distinguished leaders from industry, government, and academia with expertise that matches the STC’s focus areas of regional transportation planning, environmental planning and review, and energy policy. The committee reviews the activities of the STC at its annual meeting and provides important external guidance on all aspects of the STC program.
The UC Davis transportation faculty consists of 58 faculty members from 13 different academic departments affiliated with ITS-Davis, including a core of 12 faculty members who focus primarily on transportation. Faculty serve on ad hoc committees for reviewing faculty research grants and dissertation fellowships, making selections for the outstanding student awards, and for other purposes as needed.
The STC staff, housed within ITS-Davis, provides critical support, particularly with respect to financial aspects of the STC. Christina Adamson, STC Program and Financial Coordinator, is responsible for completing required financial reports and coordinating competitive grant and fellowship programs. She also supervises maintenance of the STC website and serves as the primary administrative contact with agencies such as the U.S. Department of Transportation, Caltrans, and the Council for University Transportation Centers. The ITS-Davis event and outreach coordinator organizes workshops and symposia, as well as other outreach activities for the STC. Annemarie Schaaf is the TTP graduate program coordinator and works with the educational director in awarding program fellowships and tracking educational activities. Roberta Devine, ITS-Davis financial assistant, is in charge of purchasing and accounts payable for the STC. Ning Wan, ITS-Davis network administrator, supervises some STC computer-related functions. Jamie Knapp, a writer under contract to ITS-Davis, contributes to the quarterly electronic newsletter and annual reports. Ernie Hoftyzer, ITS-Davis management services officer, oversees all staff assigned to the STC program.
