Senior staff from major US cities are taking part in a free, invitation-only online seminar series on Sustainable Streets. The series is being organized by the Sustainable Transportation Center at the University of California at Davis with organizational assistance by the US EPA Smart Growth Division.
The seminar series, which uses the online conferencing capabilities of Adobe Connect, will:
- Provide a forum for staff of major cities to present their work on sustainable street design and implementation for the benefit of their peers
- Create a peer group to facilitate ongoing senior staff exchanges about street design and implementation
- Provide a forum for information exchange between the research and practitioner communities working on topics related to sustainable streets. Subject areas may include urban forestry, urban ecology, pavement design and travel behavior.
- Create a program that will be shaped by the input of participants
The seminar organizers are working with the following preliminary definition of Sustainable Streets:
Sustainable Streets are thoroughfares that apply sustainable design principles, promote least-polluting ways to connect people and goods to their destinations and contribute to livable communities. Sustainable streets include design features that address three themes of movement, community, and ecology (please see the article by Ellen Greenberg published in the latest issue of the ITE Journal). This definition provides a foundation for the seminar series to address topics from bike lanes to in-street rain gardens. Participants will learn about the plans and accomplishments of the some of the country's largest cities in addressing these issues.
